“Progressive” socialists are no different than any other group. They have their heroes and heroines and they have their everyday people. In the cases of which we are speaking, the socialist left has heroes and heroines that were once revolutionaries but then fell off the wagon and become something else.
These include Angela Davis and that darling of the anarchists, Noam Chomsky. The problem is not necessarily that they fell off the wagon. We do not feel “betrayed” by their “sellout”. The problem for us is that those anarchists and social democrats refuse to recognize that times changed, Davis and Chomsky have changed and it is time to find new heroes. Instead they trot out these heroes and heroines to all their demonstrations acting as if there has been no change either in them or the movement.
