Lakeshore avenue is a pretty expensive street in Oakland to start a cooperative. But Arizmendi Bakery has thrived in its 20 plus years existence. Most people in Yankeedom think that if you don’t motivate people with higher wages they won’t work as hard. Well, everyone at the bakery, no matter how long they’ve worked there, makes the same flat rate. In addition, they choose their schedules, rotating them every six months and they are in control over how many hours they work. They decide together what to produce, when, and where to produce it and what audience to target.
