Why Propaganda is Necessary to Uphold the Illusion of Democracy

In his book 1984, George Orwell described a number of techniques used to control people including doublethink and newspeak.

One of the places where these are utilized is by conducting wars in which the enemy is portrayed as subhuman. Another arena where these techniques and propaganda play out is in convincing people that a) democracy is an achievement that the US state permanently possesses, and b) having two candidates is enough to be considered a democracy.
