Michael Hudson has written a terrific article on the work of the political economist Karl Polanyi and his contributions to understanding capitalism. Not only does he argue that capitalism is the first economic system to artificially separate economics from the rest of society, but he added insight into how Bronze Age elites survived by the forgiveness of debts.
