Rank-And-File Unionism from the Bottom Up: The Legacy of Herman Benson

Most of us would agree that we do not live in a democratic society. But what about unions? After all, union leaders are not capitalists who control the workplace so that workers have no say. Well, truth be told, unions are not democratic at all. In fact, Labor Notes is one of the only organizations dedicated to making unions more democratic. In addition, Herman Benson almost single-handedly fought for union democracy for decades. His tiny organization, Association of Union Democracy, supported workers’ rights to criticize their leadership, meet, caucus and run for office. His work touched the lives of workers from teamsters, hotel workers, transportation works to construction workers and teachers.
