Most of the players in the NFL are Black. Yet today 30 out of 32 coaches are white. How can we explain this? Research has shown that there is no difference in the experience, skill set and even connections between Black and white coaches in terms of recruitment. However, the author claims that organizational culture prefers that new coaches resemble the people who already work in the organizations. Most are white. The culture of sports organizations is no different. Lastly, there is systemic racism in society as expressed in the lack of support for the Black Lives Matter movement in the NFL. The situation is so bad that seven of the 32 teams, more than 20%, have always only had white coaches.
