Worker Coops Thrive in Rwanda Thickening The Social Fabric

It is tempting to think that worker cooperatives would never have a chance to grow in a country which has known genocide as recently as 1994. But since then, Rwanda has come back. It has had an 8% growth rate since 2000 and coops have been a big part of it. Since 2018, 43% of Rwandans over 15 years of age are working in coops. There is a Rwandan Co-operative Agency (RCA) with coop farms for coffee production dotting the landscape. Coops have grown nine-fold since 2005.
