Japanese Pan-Asianism: Independent Foreign Policy or Dupe for Yankeedom?

China is not the only Asian country that has regional ambitions.  Japan has been promoting its own Pan-Asianism for well over 100 years. On the one hand, there are pragmatic reasons why Japan should do this. They are heavily dependent on hydrocarbon and need trading partners as well as reliable oil and gas routes. But at the same time, Japan is heavily involved with US foreign policy designs to counter the presence of Russia and China. How much is Pan-Asianism a real foreign policy and how much is it an ideological tool which covers up Yankee imperialism?
