What has been the impact of COVID-19 on one of the most ambitious infrastructural projects in the world, the New Silk Road? The problem is that Chinese workers abroad have been called home as international cooperation on the project has slowed considerably. The flabbergasting irrationality of global capitalism is on display. On the one hand, capitalists want go wherever they want to make a profit. But when a pandemic hits, rather than a unified global response we have each nation-state for itself. If global capitalists cared in the slightest about their long-term future they would come to the aid of the New Silk Road project because in the long-run it would benefit capitalism as a whole. But for capitalists “long-run” is a dirty word.
