We remember reading this book 50 years ago and marveling at how someone 24 years old could write a book like this. On the surface you might think The Conditions of the Working Class in England is simply a description of horrible conditions. It is much more than that. It describes the history of industrialization and its analysis of wages and capitalist expropriation of surplus value which was prior to Marx. If you read this book today, you don’t have to look very far, not in “Third World” countries but in western core capitalist countries to see that conditions of workers in many cases are as bad, or even worse.
