Almost 60% of Yankee workers will come up short after a month of being quarantined, according to a Newsweek survey. This means an inability to pay rent, utilities and garbage. These types of statistics reveal the utter poverty of the neoliberal state’s response. A one-time payment of $1,200, plus delayed unemployment at a fraction of workers’ pay, clearly shows a lack of planning on the state’s part. Since the duration of the virus is unknown, workers should be paid a monthly income for the foreseeable future, until it is medically determined that returning to work is safe.
