The crucial test of the failure of social democracy came in 1973 when Allende tried to usher in socialism by parliamentary means. It wasn’t long before US-backed generals were in power. But the last couple of decades of “moderates” have not solved Chile’s economic problems. Now the Chilean people are in the streets again. Hopefully, this time they won’t bother with social democracy again.
