One of the problems workers face when leading a strike for higher wages and better working conditions is that they have no control over how the capitalists respond.
One way can be moving or closing a work-site. Another can be to lay off workers. This holiday season thousands of workers have been laid off so that capitalists can recoup some of their profits due to a 4% increase in wages over the last year. This article points our that union heads knew these cuts were coming but didn’t tell workers for fear they would not sign up for the new contract for which the union had just negotiated.
