Sadly, most people imagine that nation-states are like Hobbes’ monads bouncing off each other, a war of all against all.
But in the geopolitical relations today between countries this scenario is hopelessly unrealistic. What makes more sense is countries committed to blocks in which one country does not do anything without consulting the others. This article is about Russia’s shifting alliances in the Middle East as a result of the Ukrainian war. Russia must engage countries in trade even when they are opposed to each other.
