Why Toppling a Statue Is More Than Symbolic: The Case of France

There are some on the left who say toppling statues is just symbolic and a distraction from more “real” economic struggles. We disagree. Monuments are capitalist artifacts towards building nationalism. They are part of a propaganda system that includes music, song, ritual and liturgy. To destroy the statues creates craters in that propaganda system. This article about French colonialism defends breaking the status for different, but related reasons.
