In a time of capitalist decline neoliberalism is hard-pressed to find heroes or heroines. It seeks rebels but without a cause. In the case of this Frida Kahlo art show, the Communist revolutionary is reduced to a safe, identity-politics framework complete with bisexuality and a multivalent self.
There is nothing about her political identity as a member of the Mexican Communist Party. This same whitewashing occurred when Freud’s work on sexuality was suppressed in the United States. It occurred when the Communist psychologist Vygotsky was reduced to “the father of cooperative learning” and when liberals suppressed MLK identity as a socialist.
