This article is justifiably skeptical that Macron’s comments about a new Europe means anything. It could be simply the echoes of his conversation with Xi still ringing in his ears. His “new Europe” is in tatters with both the EU and NATO. Being in charge of its own security is something that would take Europe decades to achieve. What we think is most important about Macron’s comments is expanding anti-NATO and anti-Americanism into the heads of the protesters, giving their call for Macron’s resignation a continental and international flavor.
