The New Left is mostly presented to us as an autonomous rag-tag of hippies and beatniks, American radicals who were opposed to both the US and the Soviet Union.
It is only in the last 20-30 years we have discovered that the New Left was co-created by the CIA first as the Congress of Cultural Freedom to oppose the Soviet Union. Later, both the CIA and the FBI were involved in funding racism and sexism to keep the left from uniting based on social class. In the 1970s we first had the Frankfurt School and then postmodernism. What they all had in common was fervant anti-communism.
