The French prided themselves on bringing in the Enlightenment. This is the appeal to value human reason over emotions, with reason in the service of science. Humanity was beyond our animal instincts and God either didn’t exist or was a distant watch-maker. Well, this article shows how “liberty, equality and fraternity” fared under French colonialism.
