Today many Western socialists don’t want to get their hands dirty.
They either write about dystopian futures or they write optimistically about a science fiction future so far away from today that they don’t have to write about transitions. Workers’ co-ops are about creating a transitional economy which strives to create economic democracy while still within a capitalist framework. In this interview Professor Jessica Gordon-Nembhard not only describes how co-ops worked during the civil rights movement but also tells us they were present in the Knights of Labor in the 19th century.
