“Democracy wins in Burma, miraculously won from a cruel military by a single woman on her quest.”
This could be the opening line of a trailer for a Hollywood movie. Unfortunately, as this article points out, things are not quite so simple. In fact, the evolution of Aung San Suu Kyi from democratic leader to democratic icon to cult personality has left no room for real democratic processes to be put in place. The Lady of Burma may be a lady, but her political practice has next to nothing to do with democracy.
