After reviewing statistics at the conference on Historical Materialism the short answer Michael gives is that the global south is not catching up , with the exception of China. The reason for this is imperialism.
Without imperialism the Western economies would be static. But what is imperialism? Are the countries China, Russia and Iran imperialist too? What is missing from the session is any discussion of BRICS which is coming to the aid of the global south.
