Carlos Martinez has written a very good article criticizing Jacobin for its anti-materialist understanding of the place of China in the capitalist world system.
China should be compared to other societies on the capitalist semi-periphery not against some socialist ideal. In spite of being surrounded by hostile capitalist powers, China leads the world far and away in developing the productive forces. It has a social landowning system which allows 90% of the people to own their home. Its cities have no slums and its wages have tripled between 2005 and 2016.
