What does Mamdani’s victory in the NYC primary mean? What it doesn’t mean is that it’s a sign that the Democratic Party could be reformed. His victory does disproves the lie that the American public is moving to the right.
When a real left candidate is a choice, people will vote for them. The idea that “socialism” is a toxic word did not keep people from voting for him. Neither did his pro-Palestinian stance. What people rejected was not socialism, but neoliberal Democratic candidates pretending they are liberals.
