“How Come You White People Have All The Cargo?” Western Pillaging of Africa
This was one of the opening lines posed to Jared Diamond in his book Guns, Germs and Steel. Diamond’s answer involved an analysis of the animal and plant distribution at the end of the last Ice Age. But what it does not explain is how in a continent where capitalism has supposedly triumphed, the citizens of that continent with enormous natural resources are so desperately poor. This article provides some very concrete answers.
