As usual, the compelling nature of articles by the staff of Labor Notes is that they track the process of how success was achieved including mistakes they made along the way. The unionizing efforts in Philadelphia began with six people out of 300 and grew to 70 organizers.
They had 2 organizers for each group session but they let the co-worker do most of the talking. They sustained interest by meeting every three weeks and assessing how each co-worker was doing using spreadsheets. In the end 130 voted for a union while 100 opposed. The organizers overcame the usual union-busting tactics by management at Whole Foods.
