Engaging Critics Can Make For a Stronger Union

This is a very good, short article about how to involve those who oppose union leadership in a process that is mutually beneficial. Listening to the opposition does not necessarily mean giving in or even compromising. The following is a five step process one leader used.

Steps for each side include:

  1. Introduce the topic and the problem to be solved
  2. Outline the opposing position to your own (showing that you understand your opposition’s views and goals)
  3. Provide the context for that opposing position
  4. Outline your own position and the context for your position
  5. Discuss how people with the opposing position would benefit by adopting elements of yours
