In reaction to capitalism proposals for infinite growth translating as the chaotic pumping out of commodities, ecological environmentalists have advocated a scaling down of the productive forces of society. Some Marxists have also advocated de-growth. Michael Roberts challenges this by suggesting that an alternative to capitalist growth is not degrowth but socialist development of the productive forces.
