Internationally, the Chinese ruling class has been heeding Marx’s exhortations to “develop the productive forces” with all its infrastructural projects, including the New Silk Road. Domestically it has raised the standard of living to eliminate absolute poverty. However, the Chinese rulers are far from treating workers with the respect they deserve as the circumstances of these delivery drivers indicate.
