This is a good article which challenges the use of the word democracy as a loaded virtue word. The author points out how the practice of democracy has been limited in terms of age, property and ability to pay taxes.
It has been used by the state to claim legitimacy and control populations. There are contradictions between the international financial markets, supply chains and climate system which affect populations, but to which there is no voting.
