Aryan Right-Wing Mythology for the New Age: Carl Jung, Mircea Eliade and Joseph Campbell

Among New Agers, Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and to a lesser extent Mircea Eliade, were hot stuff in Yankeedom in the late 70s and throughout the 1980s. These New Agers either didn’t know or could care less what their heroes’ political affiliations were. They might be somewhat surprised by Jung’s initial interest in the Nazis, or Eliade’s championing of the Romanian fascist Iron Guard. They might be amazed to know that Joseph Campbell threatened to fail his students if they participated in the protests of the 1960s.
