Venice Getting Wired Into China’s New Silk Road

In their histories of capitalism, Immanuel Wallerstein and Giovanni Arrighi identified Venice and Genoa and the home of merchant capitalism. But by the early modern period these ports were surpassed by Atlantic trade routes. Today with the rise of the Chinese economy and Europe mired in economic stagnation, China is offering Venice a new part to play in the construction of a New Silk Road.
