Venezuelan communes are sites where productive activities are controlled by a range of community assemblies. These are fascinating examples of socialist forces experimenting. These communes are an attempt to work with some of the shortcomings of cooperatives and state-owned socialist factories by addressing not just economic production but other social relationships, such as parenting and gender relations at the grassroots level. What is the relationship between the State under the party of Maduro and the communes which exist on a local level? Is it supportive, hostile or something in between?
