There are a number of things that are uplifting about this strike. The first is the teacher’s willingness to strike beyond a single day. The second is that this strike was started by rank-and-file teachers, not the unions. The unions have done nothing but either oppose the strike or limit it to a single day. Third, this strike undermines the stereotype that people in the south or people living in rural areas are only conservative. “Liberal” cities such as San Francisco or New York would be lucky if their teachers showed some of the courage of these teachers.
