Myopic Game Theory: Justification for Hobbesian Way of Life

Game theory came into its own as a military strategy for predicting how Mordor could protect itself against an invasion by the Soviet Union. But the theory then spread to understanding capitalist consumer strategies and even “prisoner dilemmas”. It is based on the assumption that people are motivated only by immediate, short-term self-interest. The theory cannot explain long-term collective projects such as scientific discoveries or artistic production or the commitment to socialism.
