While we are on the subject of Halloween, this  is a wonderful and very unusual grand history of Russian horror. Much of the discussion compares Russian horror with the West.

Unlike in the West, monsters are not simply pure evil but have strengths as well as weaknesses. Russian horror is less about screaming but more about why “the dark” exists in the first place.
