During our book club meetings many topics and issues come up that are not necessarily related to whatever book we’re reading. We put them on a list to be addressed at more length separately. Once every 6 weeks or so we choose a couple of those topics to have a more full-bodied discussion about at the forum. We open it up to anyone who might be interested, while the book club requires more of a commitment, to come and share their thoughts, questions and ideas. The topics typically generate a great discussion.
The topic for this evening’s forum is:
What are the factors that lead to over-consumption under capitalism? Topics will include advertising, planned obsolescence, and the creation of needs out of wants.
The structure of the forum will be to watch Part I of Adam Curtis’ Documentary called the Century of the Self. This is about the rise of advertising between World War I and World War II featuring Edward Bernays.
After that we will discuss what we saw in the light of overconsumption and the creation of needs along with whatever else strikes you.
In between our discussion we’ll munch on various goodies we all bring.
