“And the disturbance that shook New York City in February 1837 was actually the precursor of a major national event. A month later a Wall Street firm failed, triggered by when southern cotton dealers defaulted on loans. The Panic of 1837 began to unfold, and a major economic depression, shook the country. And the angry people grabbing flour on a winter night in lower Manhattan seemed to have predicted the national calamity.”
