Believe it or not, there was a time when social democracy had a real radical left-wing. Karl Liebknecht was the only Social Democrat in Germany to vote against World War I. He constantly advocated against wars and together with Rosa Luxemburg broke with the SPD and founded a new party, the German Communist Party. He and Rosa were murdered when the German Revolution broke out in 1918.
