Chile, Bolivia and Lithium: In the Crosshairs of the Great Powers

Whenever we look at mass protests we ask:

  1. Is the country with the protests a rival of the Great Powers?
  2. Do they have natural resources the Great Powers want?
  3. Which social class is defining the protest?
Lithium is an important resource for powering electric vehicles. Both China and the Yankees have a stake in its production. Thus the protests in Chile and Bolivia have to be understood as having a Great Power rivalry as part of their dynamic.
