Whenever we look at mass protests we ask:
- Is the country with the protests a rival of the Great Powers?
- Do they have natural resources the Great Powers want?
- Which social class is defining the protest?
Lithium is an important resource for powering electric vehicles. Both China and the Yankees have a stake in its production. Thus the protests in Chile and Bolivia have to be understood as having a Great Power rivalry as part of their dynamic.
