Can Liberalism be Rescued from Capitalism and Neoliberalism?

According to the author of this article, liberalism was against feudalism, the monarchy and conservative traditions. But then capitalism got involved beginning with John Locke. This is a provocative article. However, it fails to face the fact that capitalism existed during liberal times even if liberals didn’t support it.

It might make sense to say liberals opposed mercantile capitalism, siding with Adam Smith. If liberals did not support capitalism as the author claims and socialism didn’t exist yet, what kind of economy did liberalism support?  Thomas Paine was the best at having a liberal theory of life.
