Many of us object to the chaotic production of commodities by capitalists and their mindless consumption. But the alternative is not Malthusian anti-growth. Malthus claimed that the rate of human reproduction is greater than the available food supply. This ignores the fact that throughout history humans have regulated their population and intervened in agricultural production, sometimes making the soil better and sometimes worse. Human society is in control of its production and reproduction for better or for worse.
